the big help out - monday 8th may

The Big Help Out, organised by The Together Coalition and their partners including The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and faith groups from across the United Kingdom, is intended to highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities across the nation.

In tribute to His Majesty The King's public service, The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.

The Big Help Out in Harpenden

In the Town Centre, look out for the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers who will be planting small flowers and seeds in pots on the Concourse outside the Library between 10am and midday. The pots will be given out to the next adult they see - a Random Act of Kindness.

Meanwhile, on Church Green, Harpenden Scouts will be offering smores around an open fire, encouraging people to find out more about their volunteering opportunities and how you can get involved.

The Harpenden Trust will be running an Open Day at their new Halls, in Southdown, giving everyone the opportunity see their new facility and learn more about volunteering for this important organisation. They will also be showcasing some of their current hall users and their activities, which are mostly volunteer run. Click here for further details.

St John's Church has organised a Community Litter Pick, beginning at 10am outside St John’s, followed by refreshments, click here to find out more about the Litter Pick and their Coronation Songs of Praise event.

Batford Springs Volunteers will also be out in force again, this time litter picking in the Nature Reserve. You can read more about this invaluable and dedicated volunteer group here.

The Hygiene Bank is a local charity project that works to help those swept into poverty to have access to products for keeping clean. They collect all new and unused toiletries and household cleaning items, including period products and nappies and ensure that anything donated locally is used to help those struggling financially in this area. To mark The Big Help Out the Hygiene Bank is asking people to lend a hand - could you volunteer or host a donations box? Find out more here: https://linktr.ee/Thbharpendenandstalbans

Hertfordshire Age UK is seeking new volunteers for their Befriending Scheme. If you're a good listener and can spare an hour a week this is a great opportunity to support this fantastic charity. Click here to see more details in their latest flyer.

Another local charity, Playpark Action Rothamsted Committee (PARC) is also looking for volunteers to help with their plans to redevelop the Rothamsted Park Skatepark in partnership with Harpenden Town Council. If you are a visitor to Rothamsted Park, a skateboarder, parent, or want to help raise funds for this incredible project, please get in touch with them. You can find more information here.
