The parks and green spaces of Harpenden are not only diverse in the amenities they offer to visitors, but also hugely important to local wildlife and biodiversity. Wander to Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve, for example, to enjoy a rare chalk lined stream, reed fen, wet woodland, meadows, hedgerows and the River Lea. This beautiful area is home to incredible wildlife from kingfishers and egrets to various species of fish and recently reintroduced water voles. There are also accessible picnic areas, information boards, a playground and a fabulous boardwalk and stepping stones route to enjoy a short stroll.
Rothamsted Park is another green space of great pride to the Town. Its lime tree avenue through the centre of the Park, one of the most photographed spaces in Harpenden, together with wide open spaces, variety of trees, rose garden, playground and gently sloping land gives this historic area a country park feel. Since its acquisition by the Town Council in 2021, considerable investment in to Rothamsted Park’s facilities has been made. Outstanding sports facilities now include tennis, paddle and netball courts, cricket and football pitches, a skate park and a first-class artificial grass pitch facility which is home to both Harenden Town FC and junior club Harpenden Colts FC. Conveniently this magnificent green space sits on the edge of the town centre, ideal to enjoy the town’s vibrant high street with fantastic independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
Harpenden Town Council has recently created a “Green Loop” – a circular route around the town connecting its picturesque paths, open spaces and trails to make a complete 15km walking or cycling route. It’s easy to follow the Loop in sections if preferred and is accessed via a number of points, a map is available here are also in printed format at the Town Hall.
The Green Loop is an ideal way to discover new areas of Harpenden, whether you are already familiar with its beautiful green spaces or you are visiting and want to explore the area. Incorporating Harpenden Common, Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve, Rothamsted Park and sites of local historical interest, such as the Nickey Line, and smaller parks and play areas it really is a wonderful way to spend time in the town.
