Honorary townsman albert (bert) pawle

It was with great sadness that the Town Council learned of the passing of Honorary Townsman and Past Town Mayor, Albert (Bert) Pawle on 16 March 2025.

Mr Pawle was elected as a Town Councillor in 1999 and served as Deputy Town Mayor in 2001/2 and then as Town Mayor on two occasions, in 2002/3 and in 2007/8.  He retired in 2023 and was made Honorary Townsman after twenty-four years’ service as a Town Councillor.  Previously, in 1998, Mr Pawle was also elected to St Albans District Council.  There, he became Mayor of the City and District of St Albans in 2008 and received the additional honour of being made Honorary Alderman.

During his long locally elected career, Mr Pawle was a very active member of the Town Council, serving on a number of Committees and Working Groups multiple times.  His banking background gave him a particular insight into policy and financial matters, but he equally devoted his energies to judging floral displays for Harpenden in Bloom and serving on the Planning, Environment (later Community Services) and Human Resources Committees, among many others.

Bert was always helping local residents, and he will be a much-missed member of our community and remembered with great affection by all those who knew him.
