Playing Out/Sustainable St Albans Festive Streets

Playing Out and Sustainable St Albans have a fun community project planned for this year's holiday celebrations! Read more about the Festive Streets scheme from the Playing Out team:

Festive Streets – a new community project

We’re very excited to announce the launch of our new scheme in St Albans District called Festive Streets. Festive Streets has been started by the team from Playing Out St Albans District, which is project run by the environmental charity, Sustainable St Albans.

“Decorate the windows on your street”

The project encourages neighbours in St Albans, Harpenden and the villages to decorate the windows on their streets during the winter Festive Season, enabling them to celebrate as a community in a contact-free way and bring cheer to their neighbourhood.

Co-ordinate with neighbours

In its simplest form, neighbours volunteer to decorate a street-facing window of their home and co-ordinate with each other to agree a timetable and a theme.

Involve all the neighbours

All the neighbours in a street are invited to join in with Festive Streets - whether they choose to decorate a window or simply enjoy the displays.  This is a key feature of the project – it is welcoming to all and builds community at the street level.

Festive classrooms or office blocks too

The Festive Street concept could equally be applied to school classroom windows, an office block or a parade of shops.

Keep it simple or go to town

The project is run at street level and neighbours can decide for themselves whether to keep it simple or go the full hog - perhaps raising money for charity or choosing a more ambitious theme.

Keeping it sustainable and safe

Residents are encouraged to use sustainable, recycled materials wherever possible and minimise energy usage, particularly on lights. All activities must be Covid-safe.

Harpenden Christmas Carnival Cancelled for 2020

Harpenden Town Council has taken the difficult decision to cancel its annual Christmas Carnival, originally scheduled for 22 November 2020.

The event, which has drawn upwards of 18,000 people to Harpenden’s Town Centre in recent years, would not be possible under current government guidelines. Taking into consideration the resources, upfront costs, and long lead time required to plan Christmas Carnival, even if guidelines were to change in the months leading up to Christmas Carnival, we would be unable to carefully organise an event of this scale in a short amount of time.

Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Nicola Linacre said, “While we are disappointed we will not be able to bring this community event to life, we must do all we can to ensure the safety of Harpenden’s residents and visitors. Despite the cancellation, we will still have our brilliant Christmas lights throughout the town this year and we look forward to bringing Christmas Carnival back to the high street in 2021.”

While the Carnival and Lights Switch On will not be taking place, the annual Christmas lights will still be on display in Harpenden, and the scheduled Farmers’ Market will go ahead on 22 November. In addition, several bookable festive workshops are currently being planned by the Town Council; more details will be announced in due course on our website and social media channels.
