We are looking for volunteers to assist with pollarding willow trees in Wheathampstead! The willow is going to be used at Harpenden’s own Batford Springs Nature Reserve – it will be used to repair a section of the riverbank, using a technique called willow spiling.
Working in partnership with the HMWT River Champion for the Upper Lea, volunteers will be pollarding the willow trees, selecting the poles that are suitable for spiling, trimming these, stacking the rest for disposal, and carrying the trimmed poles to the collection area. Some equipment will be provided, but please bring your own if you have it -- gloves and any or all of loppers, pruning saw, secateurs will all be used!
Volunteers are welcome for to help out for an entire session or ; there’s no minimum attendance obligation.
