if you're waiting in your car turn your engine off

Harpenden Town Council’s campaign to stop idling

Running your engine, or “idling”, when you’re not driving is not only bad for the environment but also bad for your health and that of your children, not to mention expensive and damaging to your vehicle.

Fumes that are released from a stationary vehicle contain a number of harmful gasses including carbon dioxide, which is bad for the environment and contributes towards climate change, as well as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons which directly affect health and contribute to respiratory illness, cancer and premature death. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable.

During the colder months when it’s tempting to keep the engine running, Harpenden Town Council is asking people to remember to turn their engine off when not driving. This is a message to remember especially when waiting to pick up from school, a community hall or club and at the station.
