Town events held in Harpenden

Southdown Christmas Light Switch On - Friday 28 November 2014

This annual event which is held in the Southdown shopping area, in 2014 is to be held on Friday 28 November 2014. Attractions include live music, children’s fairground rides, shops opening late and a Christmas Fair at the Methodist Church from 5.30pm with the lights being switched on by the Town Mayor at 6.00pm. Batford Christmas Light Switch On - Sunday 30 November200_IMG_4744.JPG 2014

The Batford Community Action Group work in partnership with the Town Council invite residents together to celebrate the festive season.  The 2014 event, held on Batford Corner, is on Sunday 30 November 2014 from 4.30pm to 7.00pm with the Christmas lights being switched on at 5.30pm. There will be fairground ride, fairground stall, scouts games, raffle, tombola, live music, Sauncey Wood Primary School singing Christmas carols, popcorn, cakes, hot indian food, teas/coffees, glass painting, face painting and don't forget Santa will be visiting with treats for the children.   This is an excellent Community Event for all the family.  For further details about the event contact the Town Council on Tel: 01582 768278.

Harpenden Carnival - Saturday 7 June 2014

The Harpenden Carnival is organised by the Harpenden Round Table. A date for 2014 is yet to be decided, however it is like to be around the 7 June 2014It will be held from 12 noon at Rothamsted Park where an afternoon of entertainment is planned. Entry into the the attractions in Rothamsted Park is by programme which can be purchased in advance from various locations around the town or at the gate on the day.

Harpenden Common Discovery Day - Saturday 14 June 2014 

200_Press Release Photo - Little Girl.JPGThe 2014 Harpenden Common Discovery Day will take place on Saturday 14 June 2014 from 10.00am until 4.00pm and will again be free for all to attend. The aim of the event is to promote Harpenden Common and encourage people to find out about this wonderful asset in the heart of their community. It includes three nature trails, a horse ride, ponds, hay meadow, woodland and is home to a variety of sporting clubs. Over the decades Harpenden Common has had varied uses including grazing for sheep, horseracing, hunting, ice skating, athletics, football, cricket, golf, circuses and fairs.

NEW ATTRACTION ADDED - MONKEY DO who specialises in temporary play installations in trees, using rope swings, industrial safety nets and soft webbing attachments which leave the trees exactly as we found them.

Attractions are to include the Ridgeside Lurchers and Falconry Display, sheep shearing, circus skills workshops, ferret racing and lots more. There will also be a variety of information stalls for community and environmental groups ranging from bees to bats and bowl carving to goats and spinning. Harpenden Town Council will be holding its annual walk around Harpenden Common on the evening of Thursday 26 June 2014, weather permitting. The walk will start at 6.30pm from Harpenden Common Golf Club car park, Cravells Road. All members of the public are invited to attend. A number of Town Councillors and Officers will be present at the walk during which they will talk about how the common is managed, explain any current/proposed works and endeavour to answer any relevant questions or concerns.

Armed Forces Day - Saturday 28 June 2014

The 2014 Armed Forces Day is to take place on Saturday 28 June 2014 from 12 noon on the Common Triangle outside the Public Halls, Southdown Road. Attractions include Veterans Parade, Cadet competitions and display, Drill display, Climbing Wall and Bouncy Obstacle Course, plus much more.

The Highland Gathering is organised by the Harpenden Lions Club and is held in Rothamsted Park in July each year. The 2014 event is to take place on Sunday 13 July 2014 from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The event which is rumoured to be the largest Gatherings outside of Scotland. There are various attractions such as piping, highland dancing and higland games competitions, Fun fair, crafters village, food and licenced bars, charity and trading stalls and much more.

Classics on the Common - Wednesday 30 July 2014

200_Classics on the Common 2011 007.jpgClassics on the Common, which is organised by Harpenden Village Rotary Club, is an annual event held in July each year on the Common. The 2014 event is to be held on Wednesday 30 July 2014. The Common comes alive with approximately 1200 cars and 250 motorcycles and scooters (this years entry has now closed), all admired by 10,000 spectors. It is rumoured that the event is Britains biggest mid-week classic car meeting and is ranked among the top events of the classics calendar. There is no charge for spectators. Teddy Bears Picnic - Saturday 16 August 2014

This annual FREE event, held in Lydekker Park, Sun Lane, will take place on Saturday 16 August 2014 and runs from 11.00am to 2.00pm. Attractions include a show by Smartie Artie the children's entertainer, face painting, a bouncy castle and games. Harpenden Food and Drink Festival - Sunday 28 September 2014

Sunday 28 September promises to be a fun day out for all the family. 

From 10am there’s the ever popular Farmers Market to whet your appetite for the big event of the day which starts at 11.30 on Church Green opposite the market. Here you will find all that’s best about food and drink from Harpenden businesses, set out around the Cookery Theatre. You’ll be able to grab yourself something to eat or drink, take a seat and enjoy a demonstration from a top chef, cook off competitions and much much more.

 Based on the popular story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a story telling session incorporating food knowledge about healthy snacks and how the different coloured fruits and vegetables help him (us) to grow. This is combined with making fruit caterpillars and banana and pretzel butterflies and includes rainbow eating colouring sheet to take home and stickers for children.

This wonderful Festival showcases the fantastic range of food, drink and produce available throughout theSt Albansdistrict. With so many excellent eateries providing fabulous food and delightful drinking holes, the festival is a great time to try something new or different.
