Town events held in Harpenden

Harpenden Carnival

The Harpenden Carnival is organised by the Harpenden Round Table which in 2013 is to be held on Saturday 8th June 2013. It will be held from 12 noon at Rothamsted Park where an afternoon of entertainment is planned. Entry into the the attractions in Rothamsted Park is by programme which can be purchased in advance from various locations around the town or at the gate on the day.

Harpenden Common Discovery Day
 

200_Press Release Photo - Little Girl.JPGThe 2013 Harpenden Common Discovery Day will take place on Saturday 15 June 2013 from 10.00am until 4.00pm and will again be free for all to attend. The aim of the event is to promote Harpenden Common and encourage people to find out about this wonderful asset in the heart of their community. It includes three nature trails, a horse ride, ponds, hay meadow, woodland and is home to a variety of sporting clubs. Over the decades Harpenden Common has had varied uses including grazing for sheep, horseracing, hunting, ice skating, athletics, football, cricket, golf, circuses and fairs.

Confirmed attractions include sheep shearing, falconry displays, the Essex dog display team, a circus skills workshop and ferret racing. There are also a variety of information stalls for community and environmental groups ranging from bees to bats and bowl carving to goats and spinning. There are activities for all the family including have-a-go archery, beat the goalie and the ever popular welly wanging.

Discovery Day will also be hosting an improved fun dog show this year, with a judge from Bedfordshire All Breeds Training Society coming along to choose the top three dogs from the following classes:

  • Most handsome dog
  • Prettiest bitch
  • Young handler (under16's)
  • Waggiest tail
  • Dog the judge would most like to take home

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Queen's Coronation we will be holding a royal themed fancy dress competition at this years Discovery Day. So we would like to see all you Kings, Queens, princes and princess. This will be judged at 1.30pm in the main arena.

Common Walk - Thursday 27 June 2013 200_P1000391.JPG

Harpenden Town Council will be holding its annual walk around Harpenden Common on the evening of Thursday 27 June 2013, weather permitting. The walk will start at 6.30pm from Harpenden Common Golf Club car park, Cravells Road. All members of the public are invited to attend. A number of Town Councillors and Officers will be present at the walk during which they will talk about how the common is managed, explain any current/proposed works and endeavour to answer any relevant questions or concerns.

Armed Forces Day - Saturday 29 June

The 2013 Armed Forces Day is to take place on Saturday 29 June 2013 from 12 noon on the Common Triangle outside the Public Halls, Southdown Road. Attractions include Veterans Parade, Cadet competitions and display, Drill display, Climbing Wall and Bouncy Castle Obstacle Course, plus much more.

The Highland Gathering is organised by the Harpenden Lions Club and is held in Rothamsted Park in July each year. The 2013 event is to take place on Sunday 14 July 2013 from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The event which is rumoured to be the largest Gatherings outside of Scotland. There are various attractions such as piping, highland dancing and higland games competitions, Fun fair, crafters village, food and licenced bars, charity and trading stalls and much more.

Classics on the Common - Wednesday 31 July

200_Classics on the Common 2011 007.jpgClassics on the Common, which is organised by Harpenden Village Rotary Club, is an annual event held in July each year on the Common. The 2013 event is provisionally to be held on Wednesday 31 July 2013. The Common comes alive with approximately 1200 cars and 250 motorcycles and scooters, all admired by 10,000 spectors. It is rumoured that the event is Britains biggest mid-week classic car meeting and is ranked among the top events of the classics calendar. There is no charge for spectators. Teddy Bears Picnic - Saturday 17 August

200_Teddy Bears Picnic 1.JPGThis annual FREE event, held in Lydekker Park, Sun Lane, will take place on Saturday 17 August 2013 and runs from 11.00am to 2.00pm. 

This year the event is being sponsored by Davenport House Patient Group with support from Mum's Guide to Harpenden. Harpenden Christmas Carnival - Sunday 24 November

12.00pm - 6.00pm   Farmers Market, Charity stalls and Enterprise stalls
12.00pm - 6.00pm   Fun Fair
12.30pm - 5.30pm   Santa's Grotto open
From 1.00pm            Stage Acts commence
3.00pm                       Procession

5.00pm                       Christmas Lights Switch On

Southdown Christmas Light Switch On - Friday 29 November

This annual event which is held in the Southdown shopping area, in 2013 is to be held on Friday 29 November 2013. Attractions include live music, children’s fairground rides, shops opening late and a Christmas Fair at theMethodistChurchwith the lights being switched on by the Town Mayor at 6.00pm.
