Town events held in Harpenden

Christmas Window Comp Winners 2011 003.jpgChristmas Window Competition

Each year the Town Council challenges shopkeepers to transform their windows into spectacular Christmas themed displays. Residents were once again asked to vote for their favourite window and with over 40 votes the winner was declared as Jolie Nail and Beauty in the High Street. Alexis Weatherley the owner of Jolie was presented with a certificate and the Harpenden rose bowl to be displayed for a year.

Runners up were Skyes Optometrists in Bowers Parade, with Lorna's in Southdown in third place.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Queens Emblem.jpgThe Town Council is planning a number of exciting activities to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June 2012. The programme of events will start on Saturday 2 June with a family fun day featuring live music and performances, stalls from local community groups, entertainment for children and much much more. If you are a member of a local group that would like to be involved on the day, please get in touch by emailing daniel.taylor@harpenden.gov.uk.

The Town Council are also in the process of looking into a number of ways to commemorate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee by installing several memorials throughout harpenden; in the town centre; Southdown and Batford. An iron arched 'gateway' is also being looked into to go at the entrance of Thompson Close. Details about the unveiling of the memorials will be published once they have been finalised.

Harpenden Carnival

The Harpenden Carnival is organised by the Harpenden Round Table which is held in May each year. This years event is to be held on Sunday 20 May 2012 and starts with a procession down the High Street from 12 noon to Rothamsted Park where an afternoon of entertainment is planned. Entry into the the attractions in Rothamsted Park is by programme which can be purchased in advance from various locations around the town or at the gate on the day.

Harpenden Common Discovery Day

This FREE event which was added to the Harpenden events calendar in 2009 to raise awareness of the Common and the countryside. Due to its massive success it has become an annual event held in June each year, this years event is to be held on Saturday 16 June 2012 and will run from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Attractions at the event include a falconry display, sheep shearing display, chainsaw sculpting, walking stick making, craft activities for children, a bug hunt and the ever popular welly wanging.

The Highland Gathering is organised by the Harpenden Lions Club and is held in Rothamsted Park in July each year. This years event is to take place on Sunday 15 July 2012 from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The event which is rumoured to be the largest Gatherings outside of Scotland. There are various attractions such as piping, highland dancing and higland games competitions, Fun fair, crafters village, food and licenced bars, charity and trading stalls and much more.

Classics on the Common

200_Classics on the Common 2011 007.jpgClassics on the Common, which is organised by Harpenden Village Rotary Club, is an annual event held in July each year on the Common. This years event is provisionally to be held on Wednesday 25 July 2012. The Common comes alive with approximately 1200 cars and 250 motorcycles and scooters, all admired by 10,000 spectors. It is rumoured that the event is Britains biggest mid-week classic car meeting and is ranked among the top events of the classics calendar. There is no charge for spectators. Teddy Bears Picnic

200_Teddy Bears Picnic 1.JPGThis annual FREE event which is held in Lydekker Park, Sun Lane is to take place in August 2012 (date to be confirmed) and runs from 11.00am to 2.00pm. This popular event which is suitable for all the family includes attractions such as a show by Smartie Artie the children's entertainer, face painting, bouncy castle and balloons.

Harpenden Christmas Carnival

665_DSC00923 landscape.JPGThis annual event which has grown year on year since its introduction on a Sunday in 2006; is to be held in 2012 on Sunday 25 November 2012. The event which is held in conjunction with the monthly Farmers Market runs from 12 noon to 6.00pm with acts on the stage from 12 noon, the procession along the High Street at 3.00pm and the main event of switching on the lights by the Town Mayor at 5.00pm. Santa’s Grotto is also open all day at Thompsons Close.

Southdown Christmas Light Switch On

This annual event which is held in the Southdown shopping area, in 2012 is to be held on Friday 30 November 2012. Attractions include live music, children’s fairground rides, shops opening late and a Christmas Fair at theMethodistChurchwith the lights being switched on by the Town Mayor at 6.00pm. Batford Christmas Light Switch On

This annual event which is held at the end of Pickford Hill on Batford Green, in 2012 is to be held on Sunday 2 December 2012 with the lights being switched on at 5.30pm. For further details about the event contact the Town Council on Tel: 01582 768278.
