The Mayor's Charities

This year the Town Mayor has chosen to support Herts Young Homeless and Harpenden Mencap.

Herts Young Homeless is an independent charity that has been supporting vulnerable young people in Hertfordshire since 1998.  Herts Young Homeless offers a variety of free services open to all 16-24 year olds who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.  It provides information and support as well as emergency accommodation through its 'Nightstop Herts' scheme.

Harpenden Mencap has been providing services to people with a learning disability since 1959 and will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year.  It is a local independent charity that is affiliated to Royal Mencap, however, it is a self-funding organisation.  Mencap was founded by Mrs Judy Fryd, a Harpenden resident, and in 2009 a commemorative stamp was issued in her honour by the Royal Mail.  The organisation provides services to people with a learning disability within Harpenden and the local district and has three residential homes providing long-term care; it also provides support to people to enable them to live more independently.
