Harpenden Town Council, in partnership with Hertfordshire Youth Connexions and the local secondary schools, set up HYTC in 1998. The purpose of the initiative was to include the young people of Harpenden in the local governance of the Town and give them an opportunity to help shape their local services and amenities.

Membership of the Youth Town Council is open to any young person aged between 11-19 who lives or attends school in Harpenden.  Our aims and objectives are:

  • To represent and communicate the views of young people of secondary school age in Harpenden and the surrounding area.
  • To work with other organisations within Harpenden and the surrounding areas to promote the views of young people.
  • Youth Town Councillors will act as representatives of young people at functions and encourage links with groups of young people.
  • To be involved in the organisation of events for young people.
  • To seek to further the understanding between groups of young people and to further the understanding of young people by the wider community.
  • We will advise on any aspects of the policy for Youth Work in the Harpenden area.
  • In pursuit of these aims and objectives, HYTC will not be linked to any political party and will promote local democracy to young people.
