Every July since 1993 the residents of Harpenden and classics car enthusiasts have flocked to the Common to marvel at the colourful, gleaming array of classics cars, motorcycles and other vehicles. Classics on the Common is one of Britain’s biggest classic car events, attracting vehicles from all over the UK and beyond.
Although principally organised for the benefit of classics car enthusiasts the event can be enjoyed by all the family. The atmosphere and sense of fun and enjoyment have to be experienced to be believed, as the thousands who attend each year could testify.
Having helped to run the event for the past four years Harpenden Village Rotary Club took over full responsibility for running it in 2009, with support from members of the Carpenters Arms Classics Car Club.
The event has always given the organisers the opportunity to raise funds for local charities too. Although there is no entry charge to the public, Harpenden townsfolk have always responded generously when approached by Rotarians with collecting buckets. This year the main charities being supported wereHertfordshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre and Grove House Hospice plus other charities supported by Rotary.
