Harpenden Town Council is organising a family fun day on Harpenden Common to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 2 June 2012 from 11.30am until 5.00pm. The event will feature live music and performances on a main stage and entertainment for children in a small arena area. There will be a tug-of-war for competitive parents and bouncy castles and activities for children of all ages.

The event will feature a range of stalls selling food and refreshments, as well as involvement from a number of community groups and charities holding raffles, tombola and other fun activities. There will be a steel band in the High Street in the morning and Public Halls will have entertainment in the afternoon with teas and coffees being served by the scouts and cakes provided by the Women’s Institute. Park Hall will be open for visitors to come and learn about the history of Harpenden through various displays being setup by the Harpenden History Society. Harpenden House Hotel will be holding a floral decoration competition, serving refreshments, having a hog roast and handing out free balloons.

Also happening over the weekend will be the lighting of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacon which will also take place on Harpenden Common outside Public Halls on Monday 4 June 2012 at 10.00pm. The Beacon will be one of a planned 2012 beacons being lit across the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Commonwealth and UK Overseas Territories, each being lit between 10.00pm and 10.30pm prior to Her Majesty The Queen lighting the National Beacon in London at approximately 10.30pm.

To celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Town Council, in partnership with the Harpenden Society, is organising for three memorials to be installed around the town. The memorials will be placed in the Town Centre, Southdown and Batford. The opening of the memorials will take place on Monday 22 October 2012.
