Harpenden Common Discovery Day
Saturday 19 June 2010
Families discovered the wonders of Harpenden Common on Saturday and enjoyed an array of activities relating to
nature and the environment, including a falconry display, duck and dog show and chainsaw carving.
Thousands of people enjoyed the free family fun day, organised by Harpenden Town Council, to encourage people to find out more about Harpenden Common, nature and the environment.
The Town Mayor, Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles said ‘It was fantastic to see the Common being used and enjoyed by people of all ages. The event is a great way to promote the many features of the Common including the nature trails, horse ride and picnic area. Even Frazzle, the Falcon, wanted to see
more of the Common and made an unplanned visit to see the golfers at
Harpenden
Common golf course for a couple of hours. The event also gives over 20 environmental groups in the area an opportunity to raise awareness of their issues and recruit new volunteers from a wide audience. ‘
The Common is home to an annual circus which was represented by Scotty’s Circus Workshop which delighted the children with magic, stilt walking and balloon modelling. Children also enjoyed seeing a working bee hive, bats, learning to spin wool, pond dipping and craft activities. The welly wanging competition proved to be extremely popular with children and adults.
Victoria Hornett, a Harpenden Common Project Day volunteer said, ‘The environmental volunteering area involving the Harpenden Common Project Days, Batford Springs Volunteers and The Friends of the Nickey Line proved to be very
popular with many residents showing an interest in our work’.
